The Kerem Tunnel, the first bicycle tunnel in Israel, has been inaugurated as part of the Jerusalem Ring Path, a 42-kilometer cycle route that circles Jerusalem, Israel's capital city.



The tunnel connects Nahal Refaim and Emek Motza. It has a southern entrance located in Refaim Park. Ein Laban is the closest. Nahal Ein Kerem is the northern entrance.

On Thursday, Jerusalem and Heritage Minister Zeev Elkin, Mayor Moshelion, Avi Baleshnikov, Gihon chairman and hundreds of cyclists were present at a celebration to mark the opening of the tunnel's 2.1-kilometer-long length.

"In the past, Jerusalem was an attractive tourist destination due to its glorious past. Elkin said that today, apart from its historical treasures it is also a destination for modern-day tourists. "The launch of the tunnel project is another milestone in the advancement of Jerusalem as a tourist destination for all types of tourists from Israel and around the globe."

Elkin, who heads the project together with Jerusalem Municipality said that his ministry invests millions of dollars in Jerusalem's tourism development and in the creation innovative activities and ventures that tie the rich history of Jerusalem to its future. I encourage cyclists to come and enjoy the modern and well-maintained cycle route that overlooks the special nature of Old Jerusalem."

Around NIS 25 million were put into in the project, financed by the Elkin's Ministry as well as the Tourism Ministry, the Jerusalem Municipality and the Gihon Corporation and the Jerusalem Purification and Sewerage Works, with the work carried out by the Jerusalem Development Authority.

Elkin stressed the fact that "The Kerem Tunnel Project is an essential tool for achieving the goal to transform the concept of transportation throughout Jerusalem." Elkin explained that the proposed tunnel will connect with the Jerusalem Ring Path and will link with existing bike routes. The tunnel will also be paved throughout its various neighborhoods.  נווה פריצקי This will help cyclists and promote green transportation in the capital.

The Kerem Tunnel, originally excavated by the Gihon Corporation in the 1990s to relocate the main sewer line toward Sorek's purification plant.

The work currently in progress includes road construction, installation of blowers, as well as advanced safety and electrical systems to make the tunnel safe for pedestrians to travel through throughout the year.

The Kerem Tunnel also allows access to special recreation areas - including the Ein Kerem neighborhood, the biblical zoo and aquarium as well as the historic natural springs of Ein Laban and Ein Haniyeh.
